Description

Phenomenological Architectural Design Project

This proposal is for a hybrid building consisting of a hostel and a galleria which includes light industry workshops and accompanying retail spaces. The design is based on the experiential elements of the surrounding urban area, which in their simplest forms are sound, light, vision, texture, and collaboration.

The occupants of this building are both backpackers and at times also the general public. Backpackers have various traits - namely that they are transient, though they will remain in the area for an elongated period, working and exploring locally during their stay. This element of discovery within the urban area is available through the alleys and nooks around Fortitude Valley allowing for personal experiences, both physical and sensory. This hybrid also provides an opportunity for the hostel residents to return and share their experiences with one another and to interact with the local population during their travels.

So how does this fit together and result in this proposal?

Firstly there needs to be attention drawn to the site area, which within it contain certain representations that are resonant with the surrounding elements mentioned before. By applying these as data points within the site, mixing them other considerations and centralizing them, a spatial arrangement is created resulting in a fractured positive urban environment.

This allows for smaller localized spaces with voided gaps, allowing connection to the existing terrain and environment. It also offers an opportunity to deliver interesting spatial arrangements on both the vertical and horizontal planes and by applying this to the proposed programme, the floor plans are able to shift and provide a notable variation between public and private lifestyles.

Note:
This project lacked in renders and 3d modelling, however time was focused on a physical model for the presentation which worked better than I had imagined.

Overall, I was happy with the outcome, though there is always room for improvement.

The board looks nice - but there seems to be no info on the actual concept/design of the project. I am guessing there is an additional board to this one, or perhaps all of that info was communicated to your jury during the presentation panel?
